그 누구의 전시도 아닌 전시가 보고 싶었던 것이 시작.

이름이 있고 작품이 있으나 그것의 조합이 어떤 의미도 이루지 못하는 것 누구의 소유 무엇으로의 분류도 되지 못하는 것.

그것이 가능한 것인지 묻고 싶었고 목격하고 싶었다.

어디에도 도착하지 않는 전시.

전시를 준비하는 어느 시점에서 잠깐 그렇게 다가오기도 했건 것 같다.

그러나 그것은 어쩌면 너무 당연히도 지속적으로 머물수 있는 것이 아니었고 공유할 수 있는 것도 아니었다.

나에게만 잠깐 어쩌면 당신에게도 잠깐 봤던 것인지 또는 그저 상상한 것인지도 모를 만큼 잠깐 나타났다가 사라진다.

물론 이 전시의 작품들은 부암동의 상업 갤러리에서 열리고 이름과 가격이 붙어 각각 흩어지게 될 것이다.

그리고 그때 진정 모든 의미를 잃게 될 것이라 상상한다.

무의미의 암흑, 혼돈의 밤으로부터 벗어나 이름을 가진 누군가의 소유로 정확한 값이 매겨진 완결된 작품으로,

그렇게 떨어져나간 파편들의 영원히 완결되지 못함의 상태로,

그러나 영원히 의미를 갖지 못함의 상태로,

끝없이 흘러가는 상상.

** 전시의 제목 「오직 밤뿐인」은 존 윌리엄스의 소설 제목 『오직 밤뿐인』을 그대로 빌려온 것이다.

It began with the desire to see an exhibition that belonged to no one.

An exhibition with names and works, yet whose combination fails to form any meaning; something that cannot be owned, cannot be classified as anything.

I wanted to ask if such a thing were possible, and I wanted to witness it.

​

An exhibition that arrives nowhere.

At some point in preparing this exhibition, it seemed for a brief moment to come close to that. Yet of course, it was never something that could remain, never something that could be shared. It appeared only briefly—perhaps only to me, perhaps to you as well, or perhaps merely imagined—before vanishing again.

Of course, the works in this exhibition will be shown in a commercial gallery in Buam-dong, each with a name and a price, each scattered apart. And at that moment, I imagine, they will truly lose all meaning.

From the darkness of the meaningless, from the night of chaos, they will emerge as completed works—owned by someone with a name, assigned an exact value. And yet, in the state of fragments fallen away, never to be completed; in the state of never possessing meaning, endlessly flowing as imagination.

** The title of the exhibition, Nothing but the Night, is directly borrowed from John Williams’ novel of the same name.
